May 14th: In-Person Celebration @ San Jose State University
This year we expanded our annual science fair to an in-person celebration at San Jose State University! On May 14th, 350+ East Side Union High School District students, families, staff, volunteers, and community organization partners gathered to explore all things STEM. This inaugural event aimed to connect ESUHSD students, and their families, with the opportunity to explore STEM and learn more about opportunities available to them at SJSU.
We were so fortunate to have community partners provide hands-on activities, which included:
- RAFT
- City of San Jose Environmental Services – ClimateSmart & Watershed teams
- SJSU – Spartan East Side Promise Program, campus tours, Science Education Resource Center
- (SERC) & chemistry club
- Synopsys – employee led 2 teams
- Elevate Tutoring
- Silicon Valley Chapter of the American Chemical Society
- South Valley Science & Engineering Fair
There was also a photo booth, tie-dying, food, and DJ lessons. Everything was offered free of charge! Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, Interim President of SJSU – Dr. Perez, and NBC’S Roy Mayeda also joined in the celebration!

Sciencepalooza FAQs
- What is sciencepalooza!? sciencepalooza! is the annual science fair (and celebration of all things STEM) of the East Side Union High School District of San Jose, California.
- Who participates? Any student in Grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 who attends an East Side Union high school may participate.
- How can I participate? You may choose to go through a traditional science fair model and be judged against a rubric. Alternatively, you may bring a passion project and receive feedback.
- What are the judging categories?

- Will I get to see other students’ projects? There will be time for you to visit projects from your friends and students from other East Side schools at our in person celebration @ SJSU on May 14th.
